The name Jan Logan is synonymous with quality and glamour as well as cutting edge design. Her jewellery has won the hearts of many in the fashion, film and music industries, providing a red carpet favourite both in Australia and the international stage.
‘I love to play with colour’ Jam Logan explains, chief designer and founder of icon Australian jewellery house that bears her name. They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but Logan sees lustrous South Sea pearls, exotic emeralds and rose quartz as close contenders too. Not to mention pink sapphires, coral, blue topaz and the whole host of candy coloured gemstones that glitter through her work.
‘We are known for juxtaposing usual stones and textures with more traditional materials’ she says, pointing out a leather choker threaded with creamy white pearls, and worn as a bracelet by Elle Macpherson. That just about sums up Logan’s approach: unexpected, creative, sometimes edgy but always wearable.
‘The feel of what we do is young and directional, but our pieces retain a classic quality that will stand the test of time’ she says.
Jan Logan was born and raised in Narrabri, north western New South Wales, where she first learned her craft as a partner in the town’s main jewellers. She went on to exhibit her own designs alongside antique pieces she collected on overseas buying trips, developing a loyal fan base–in the process. She opened her first boutique in Sydney’s Double Bay in 1989 and today displays her work through Jan Logan stores in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Selfridges in London.
‘I hope what sets us apart is our philosophy, which is simple and elegant but with a bohemian edge’ says Logan. ‘I design with a certain type of woman in mind, a dynamic modern woman who uses jewellery as a daily accessory’. The Logan pauses, smiles her slow sparkling smile. ‘Better make that necessity’.
